Team Days - Exploring Manchester & Stockport Regeneration Projects

Earlier this week we embarked on a two-day exploration of Manchester's vibrant urban landscape, uncovering innovative projects and gaining invaluable insights.

Day 1 - Manchester

On day one, we immersed ourselves in Central Manchester, starting with a visit to the new urban Mayfield Park, guided by Paul Morris from Civic Engineers. Paul provided insight into how the rejuvenated River Medlock provides habitat for wildlife and how the park integrates Manchester's industrial heritage by repurposing existing structures and using locally sourced materials.

Next we visited the captivating National Trust Castlefield Viaduct. We were inspired by the transformation of the steel structure into a green sky garden in the heart of the city and we are looking forward to seeing it expand.

Continuing our exploration, we ventured into the distinctive and popular neighborhoods of New Islington and Ancoats, guided by Mark Blain and Calum Oakes from OPEN (now SLR) and our associate Jayne Lomas. Their expertise provided deep insights into urban regeneration, community integration and a real transformation that took place over the past 20 years.

Wrapping up the day, we gathered for a few drinks and a meal at Maray, reflecting on the diverse projects and initiatives.

Thank you to everyone who joined us - we're grateful for the valuable insights shared by local experts!

Day 2- Stockport

On the second day of our Greater Manchester trip, we explored Stockport with a fantastic tour led by Peter Haymes from Stockport Council, organised by our associate jim fox, and featuring a guest appearance from Jordan Butler of Doncaster Council. We visited the new Transport for Greater Manchester Stockport Interchange, Merseyway Shopping Centre, and the historic Underbanks and Market Place. This tour highlighted how council vision, leadership, and dedicated officer support can attract funding, foster public and private collaboration, and drive targeted investments to rejuvenate a place.

We wrapped up the morning with a delightful pizza lunch at Alfredo's in the historic Winter's building, soaking in the charm of Stockport underbanks.

Later, we visited Woodford Garden Village, which showcased some excellent green infrastructure, particularly SUDs, and high quality maintenance.

It was a busy and insightful couple of days, and we're grateful to everyone who got involved. Thank you for your time and expertise!
